How to Make a Wood Sign with Perfect Lettering

wood hello sign

My front door needs a new sign so…. I made this one. You do not need to have any experience making signs. I have included step by step instructions that are very easy. Once you finish it will look like you spent a lot of money and all your neighbors will want you to make one for them.

Materials:

  • wood (I cut the board to 11 x 16, but do any size you wish)
  • wood stain
  • rag
  • plastic glove
  • chalk
  • masking or painters tape
  • paint pen
  • mason jar
  • wire
  • templates (text and heart)

Step 1: Put on your glove so you don’t get stain all over your hands. Stain your wood board.

Step 2: Cut out the template. Turn paper over so wording is facing down.Uusing chalk color over the words. You can use pencil or crayon as well. Since I’m using a dark wood board the pencil would be hard to see so I chose white chalk. (Yes, I used my kids chalk that is all broken).

Step 3: Turn the paper over and place it on your board where you want it and tape it. Using a pencil trace over the words. Remove the paper.

Step 4: Your letters have been transferred over. Using a paint pen trace over the letters and color in. Don’t worry about the chalk dust. When you are all finished painting in your letters & it has dried, using a slightly damp rag clean if off.

Step 5: Drill 2 small holes where you want your jar to go and then put your wire through it and tighten in the back by twisting the wire. If the wire doesn’t lay flat tape it down. Then drill two holes at the top of the board, one on each side, to make the hanger.

Step 6: Find some pretty flowers to put in the jar.

Hang your masterpiece on the front door or a wall in your home and get ready for everyone to ask you where you got it from.
