DIY Cake Toppers

how to make a cake topper

Cake toppers are the perfect way to bring your cakes or cupcakes up a notch and add just a little something special. The only problem with cake toppers are they can be pretty expensive and more than likely, depending on what it is, you’ll only use it once.

For my 40th birthday I looked around for toppers and found some that I liked but not enough to buy and I didn’t really like the price tag either. I knew it would only be used one time so I had to consider the price. After much looking around, I finally decided to make my own.

I went to Michael’s and bought a sheet of super sparkly scrapbook paper for $.99. Can’t get much cheaper than that! It is super simple and easy to make any kind of topper you may want. Since I am not very talented when it comes to fondant I opt for paper instead.

Supplies

  • scrapbook paper or craft paper
  • printer
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • tape or glue
  • toothpicks, wooden skewers, or something else to attach your topper to

Step 1:

Print out your design, in my case it was numbers.

***Important Note: Depending on the type of paper you are using you could print directly onto your crafting paper or print on plain paper and trace onto your crafting paper. I needed to trace onto my paper because of the sparkles, I also had to trace on the back so if you need to do the same make sure when you go to print you select the button flip horizontally. This way your design won’t be backwards after you cut it out.

Step 2:

If you need to trace then do that and then cut out.

Step 3:

Attach your numbers or letters to toothpicks, wooden skewers, straws or something else. Use tape or glue to attach. I used washi tape.

Step 4:

Put in your cake

Pretty simple.
