Do you have a memory of a family member, a family home, a piece of furniture, etc…, that brings so much joy and happiness to you?

I’m going to show you how you can take that memory and turn it into a tangible item. Most memories come from pictures, what I did came from inside a home. I loved my grandparents, they were a blessing in my life. I was lucky that I was able to spend a lot of time wth them at their home. After they passed away their house went up for sale. My grandpa built the house so it was a very sad day, going over there was going to end.

My family and I went through all of their things and took what we wanted. Some items were taken for the attached memories and some where things that I could use. In my case I wanted to take EVERYTHING  but really, who has the space and do I really need it all? The answer to that is a big fat NO! It’s just hard to depart from what was.

Now, this might sound weird but one of the items I took from the house or should I say off the house was the screen door. This was the door everyone used to enter into the house and leave through. It had a squeak to it and every time I opened it a memory was made inside. It was very special. My intention, when I took the door, was to use it on my house, but it was too tall and too thick so it wouldn’t fit. When I found this out I held on to it, I couldn’t bear to throw it away.

Nine years later the door finally found its purpose. My husband had the idea…

He took the door and cut the frame and the screen to make it my requested size.  I have the original handle on it as well as the paint that is peeling in certain spots. Then I had the idea to put small gauge wire across and hang an old picture of my grandparents on it. He made two, one for me and one for my sister. I see it everyday and can still hear the sound of it opening and closing. The picture on there reminds me of the legacy they left and and the warm home they created.
