When I was a kid my parents would let me and my sister get a Shirley Temple at a special occasion like a wedding or birthday and occasionally when we went out for dinner; it was always such a special treat and brings back great memories! My kids had a Shirley Temple for the first time when we recently went to a wedding, they loved them but I think what they really liked was the cherry!
For birthdays I always make homemade ice cream. I had grenadine in the cabinet and thought what could I make with this? I had an idea, Shirley Temple Ice Cream!
What’s in a Shirley Temple? Ginger ale, a splash of grenadine and a maraschino cherry. Just three simple ingredients.
To make the ice cream I had to experiment in order to get just the right amount of ginger ale and grenadine. After some taste tests I think I got it!
What’s great about this ice cream is it is a little fizzy because of the carbonation from the ginger ale. It’s also a little bit addictive.
I hope you like it and it brings back memories for you.

Made this and it came out lovely! I admit I was a little skeptical of using the ginger ale straight but everything worked out wonderfully. Took about 25 minutes in the mixer and seemed to not be solidifying, but texture improved significantly with a 2 hour trip to the freezer. I made with lactose free half and half and whole milk for some friends and no issues with the ratios as written.
I am happy to hear you liked it and the modifications worked.
What a neat idea! 🙂
