Buying canned items is super convienient, right? All you do is open your cupboard, pick out the can you want to open, warm it up, maybe, depending on what it is, and then eat it. But making homemade tastes better. This black bean recipe is sure to get you to say goodbye to the can.
We eat of good amount of beans so I decided that I would make them from scratch. Not only do they taste 100x better, but you will also save money and your kitchen will smell so good. It does take a little extra time and some planning ahead but it’s so worth it.

Making a batch of beans will save you time and money. I recommend doubling the recipe if you have some extra freezer space. After you have made your batch you can easily divide them up for future meals. The beans freeze nicely and did I mention they taste 100x better than canned. They also make a great snack. My daughter had some of them for her after school snack, she even had some with breakfast.
The full flavor of these beans comes from the onion, garlic, thyme, and bay leaf. The recipe is very versatile. You can add other herbs like cilantro or rosemary or omit the thyme all together. It all depends on what flavor you want. Mixing up the flavors is easy and adds variety to your meals.

Before you can make the beans you will need to soak them. There are two ways you can do this:
*Quick Soak
Rinse the beans and put in a large pot. For 14 oz of beans add 6 to 7 cups of hot water and bring to a rapid boil, boil for 2 minutes. Turn the heat off and let them stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse.
*Overnight Soak
Rinse the beans and put in a large pot. For 14 oz of beans add 6 to 7 cups cold water. Let it stand for 8 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse.
- 14 oz dried black beans
- 3-4 garlic cloves, peeled
- 1/2 onion, peeled
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 3 fresh thyme sprigs
- Soak beans. See * directions above about quick soak or overnight soak.
- Once beans have soaked and been rinsed and drained add 6 cups of water.
- Add in the remainder of the ingredients. Place the whole 1/2 onion in pot, do not cut up.
- Bring to a boil and lower heat to simmer. Simmer until you have reached the desired tenderness, about 1 1/2-2 hours.
- Once cooled remove garlic, onion, bay leaf, and thyme sprigs.
- Refrigerator for 5 days or freeze up to 6 months
